The short version
- The barcode generator, label maker, Digital Link QR generator and Test scan run in your browser. What you type is not sent to us.
- There are no accounts and no advertising, and BarcodeFox sets no cookies.
- We count page views with Plausible Analytics, which does not use cookies or build a profile of you.
- The Barcode API only receives what you put in a request, uses it to draw the image, and does not store it in a database.
- The Chrome extension makes no network requests at all.
Barcodes you make on the website
When you use the barcode generator, the label maker or the Digital Link QR generator, the barcode is encoded and drawn by code running in your browser. Downloads (SVG, PNG and label sheets) are created on your device. Test scan reads the image with a decoder that is loaded from barcodefox.com and also runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
The one exception is the API page: if you open the PNG link in its playground, your browser requests that image from the Barcode API, so the values in the link are sent to our server as described below.
The Barcode API
Requests to barcodefox.com/api/v1/ are handled by a Cloudflare Worker. The data you send (in the URL or the request body) is used only to draw the barcode and return it. We do not save it to a database or use it for anything else.
- Caching: PNG images requested with GET are cached by Cloudflare under their URL, so the same image can be returned quickly the next time it is requested. Use POST if you do not want an image cached.
- Rate limiting: to keep the API free and available, each IP address can make up to 120 requests a minute. The IP address is used only for this count.
- Errors: if drawing an image fails unexpectedly, a technical error message is logged so we can fix the problem.
Analytics
We use Plausible Analytics to count visits and see which pages are useful. When a page loads, the script sends the page address, the referring site and the domain. From the request, Plausible derives your country, browser, operating system and device type. It does not set cookies, does not store your IP address and does not track you across websites. Visits are counted with an identifier that changes every day, so a visitor cannot be followed from one day to the next.
Because the generator keeps your data out of page addresses, the barcode content you type is not part of what analytics receive. Content blockers that block analytics do not affect any feature of the site.
Cookies and local storage
BarcodeFox does not set cookies. If you choose a language from the language menu, the choice is saved in your browser’s local storage as barcodefox.locale, so the home page opens in that language next time. It never leaves your device, and you can remove it by clearing site data for barcodefox.com.
The Chrome extension
The BarcodeFox extension for Chrome makes barcodes, QR codes and check-digit checks on your device and makes no network requests.
- Only after you open the popup or choose a BarcodeFox item from the right-click menu does it read the current tab’s selected text, address, title and product data (JSON-LD) to fill in the code. It has no access to other tabs and does not run on pages by itself.
- Your last 8 values and the Digital Link resolver domain you choose are saved in the browser’s extension storage (
chrome.storage.local). Uninstalling the extension removes them. - Copying puts the barcode or code on your clipboard only when you click a copy button or menu item. Downloaded SVG and PNG files are made on your device and saved by the browser like any other download.
- The Full generator link in the popup opens barcodefox.com with
utm_source=chrome-extensionin the address, so our analytics can count visits that come from the extension.
Hosting and service providers
The website and the API are served by Cloudflare. Like any web server, Cloudflare processes your IP address and request details to deliver pages and protect the service from abuse, under Cloudflare’s privacy policy. Analytics are provided by Plausible, as described above. We do not sell or share data with anyone else.
A GS1 Digital Link QR code points to the resolver domain you choose. When someone scans it, their phone contacts that domain, not BarcodeFox. Links to GS1 publications and other websites are governed by those websites’ own policies.
Your choices and rights
We do not keep personal data that is linked to you, so in most cases there is nothing for us to access, correct or delete. You can always clear the language setting from your browser, block analytics with a content blocker, or uninstall the extension. If you have a question or a request about your data, email us and we will answer.
BarcodeFox is a general tool for businesses and individuals. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
Changes to this policy
If we change how BarcodeFox handles data, we will update this page and the date at the top before the change takes effect.
